From the Editor's Desk: London calling, inside man and Nexus done right

From the Editor's Desk

It's another working weekend. Time for some quick hits:

  • If I wasn't over the Samsung Galaxy S3 fakes, leaks and fake leaks, I certainly am now. Alex and I will be at the event on Thursday. I can wait till then.
  • Speaking of heading overseas, I used MaxRoam in Barcelona this year and am using it again this week in the UK. 500MB for $13? (Which is more than even I can use in two days.) Sold.
  • And that's just the start of the travel. Coming up next week we've got the CTIA conference in New Orleans.
  • If you haven't seen Jean-Baptist Queru's latest Q&A on updates to Ice Cream Sandwich and how Sony's gotten updates out the door in about 5 months. That's due in no small part, JBQ says, to the amount of code that Sony's contributed back to the Android Open Source Project. Remember the early days of Sony Ericsson and the Xperia X10, which launched in the age of Eclair with Android 1.6 Donut, and finally got updated a year later. Things certainly have changed.
  • Something that hasn't changed? Carrier approval times. JBQ rightly points out that carriers often are the bottleneck in getting updates released, which does seem a little insane in the Nexus world. But neither is it new. If the carrier's selling the phone, it's going to go through (I'd assume) the same rigorous (read: slow) testing process as any other phone. Verizon's been, shall we say, fastidious, long before Android even existed. It's funny to see blogs set their hair on fire over this one.
  • I hesitate to even write about these sorts of Q&As. They're a rare glimpse into the inside workings of things and are best read in their entirety, straight from the source. It pains me to see blogs pick and choose the juicy parts for publication. ("OMG Verizon is sooooooo slow." Thanks for that insight.) It's pretty rare that we get a relatively unfiltered and unfettered look at how things work, with actual opinion from the folks who make the donuts instead of PR-speak and lawyered releases, and even more incredible that folks like JBQ stick around to answer questions. Let's not spoil it and waste the opportunity.
  • I'm pretty excited about Google once again selling devices. I'm still curious as to how it's going to handle the problems it ran into the first time — namely customer service, though it does have a dedicated page for orders and returns questions. But this is the way Nexus devices were meant to be sold and maintained (meaning updated). Forget the carrier. (And, yes. That means CDMA gets shut out again. Them's the breaks.) And if you didn't notice, note how Google's calling it a "Devices" store and not a "Phone" store. If that's not a flashing neon sign that tablets are coming, I don't know what is. (And I'm willing to bet it's going to go beyond tablets, as well.) The important part is that I should once again be able to say "You want updates the day they're pushed? Get a Nexus." — and do so without looking like an idiot.
  • The site redesign is coming along well. (Major props to our designers and coders, whose work you enjoy every day but whose names you never get to see.) We're still tweaking things, and as I've said before, this is only the beginning. If you've got feedback, leave it here.

TTFN. We'll see you from London this week, and NOLA the next.

Chris Brown?s Dog Breeding Scandal Grows

Chris Brown can’t catch a break, even when it comes to his dogs. There is a scandal brewing again, but this time it’s hard to tell if he has even done anything wrong. All that has happened is that Chris Brown posted a picture of himself with some puppies and even tried to sell one or two of them on a breeder’s website. Next thing you know PETA is making statements about it. First off, I’m no big fan of his. All I had to see was the picture of Rihanna after the beating he was convicted of giving her. It’s just disgusting. To me, there is no such thing as “snapping” to the point that you do that to someone. But that was the past. Since then, every publication from TMZ to the Florida Alligator have completely destroyed his every move. He can’t even Tweet something without getting owned. I usually like it, and I think it’s well deserved. This puppy conspiracy has me a little confused. According to reports, he could be breeding pit bulls for profit. Sure, that’s a pretty low thing to do. There are way too many of them, and let’s be honest, the Hip [...]

Christina Aguilera Called "Total Bitch" By The Wanted

British boy band The Wanted performed on The Voice, and didn't hesitate to describe one of the less fun aspects of that experience in an interview.

That being Christina Aguilera.

The judge "is a total bitch," the band's Tony Parker ranted to Now FM, in an interview that has since been yanked from YouTube. He continues:

"She might not be a total bitch in real life, but to us, she was a total bitch ... she just sat there and didn't speak to us. Wouldn't even look at us."

Wanted CA

"She was quite rude," Siva Kaneswaran (second from right), added, backing up the claim by Parker (second from left). "I mean, Who does that?"

Max George (middle) chimed in, "She was a bit scary, to be honest."

When asked to compare their time on The Voice with their recent appearance on American Idol, George said, "J. Lo's hot, Christina's nothing special."

The Wanted performed on The Voice the same night Justin Bieber showed up to debut a preview of his "Boyfriend" video, and said that Aguilera was equally cold to the "Baby" crooner, making a weird face as Bieber went in for a hug.

Aguilera, for her part, denies she snubbed anyone: "Haha," she tweeted. "Can't a girl have a little Bieber Fever after getting kissed by the Biebs?"

American Idol Top 6 Performances: Choosing Wisely?

The top six on American Idol were given two tasks on last night's performance show:

  1. Cover a Queen classic.
  2. Cover any song your heart your heart desires.

The latter option led to tracks made famous by artists such as Jim Hendrix, Miley Cyrus and Dave Matthews. Who came out on top? Whose second round performance makes him/her deserving of your vote? Watch them all now and then cast it...

Jessica Sanchez initiated the second round of performances with a take on Luther Vandross. She just wants to "Dance With My Father," people.

Skylar Laine then followed up a terrific version of "The Show Must Go On" with a flawless cover of "Tattoos on This Town." She's our favorite at this point.

Hollie Cavanagh didn't reach far back for her selection, honoring Miley Cyrus with the following rendition of "The Climb."

Joshua Ledet made India Arie proud with a lovely performance of "Ready For Love."

Elise Testone making like Hendrix? The finalist actually pulled it off well with this cover of  "Bold As Love."

And, finally, in the least surprising choice of the night, Phillip Phillips emulated Dave Matthews with "The Stone."

WHICH PERFORMANCE DID YOU LIKE BEST?

Usher Makes Fans 'Scream' With New Dance Single

Club track is second release from singer's upcoming Looking for Myself.

With nine #1s, Usher is easily one of the most reliable hitmakers in the game, and he may have just found his next smash hit. The R&B superstar released his latest single, "Scream," on Thursday (April 26), and it has chart-topper written all over it.

The Max Martin-produced banger finds Usher in familiar territory, singing the virtues of living for the moment — just as he did on 2010's "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," which was also helmed by Martin. With a pounding beat and a massive, swelling hook, the song returns Usher to the club after his recent foray into slow-jam territory with "Climax," the Diplo-produced first single from his forthcoming Looking for Myself.

"I see you over there, so hypnotic Thinking 'bout what I do to that body/ I get you like ooh baby baby," Ush sings. "Got no drink in my hand/ But I'm wasted/ Getting drunk off the thought of you naked/ I get you like ooh baby baby."

In addition to his own new album, Usher also recently hit the studio with David Guetta to record a follow-up to their hugely successful collaboration "Without You." Usher made a surprise appearance during Guetta's set at Coachella on April 14.

"These are really big records that we're working on right now," Guetta told The Hollywood Reporter of his new track with Ush. "It's really crazy."

Head to our Newsroom blog to see why it's time for an Usher greatest-hits album.

Looking for Myself is set for release on June 12 and is expected to be released in both standard and deluxe editions. The album is Usher's follow-up to his 2010 smash Raymond v. Raymond, which produced the massive singles "OMG" and "There Goes My Baby."

For his new record, Usher returned to work with many of his Raymond collaborators, including Rico Love and Jim Jonsin, as well as Diplo, Martin and Salaam Remi, who is best known for his work with Nas and the late Amy Winehouse.
